An interactive 1-day workshop designed to give you a deeper insight into what it’s like to work with a canine co-therapist in Exeter, Devon.

Our connection to the animals around us has been part of our evolution for thousands of years, and for very many people this connection is an integral part of what supports their good mental health.

This is an expanding and exciting area of therapy work with a range of possibilities far beyond reading to dogs in schools and the obvious benefits of stroking those velvety soft ears!

Blending underpinning theory with interactive, relaxed learning, wherever your current level of understanding and experience this day is designed to give you a deeper insight into what it’s like to work with a canine co-therapist - the challenges, the creative possibilities, the connections and the enormous fun.

During the day you will

  • Have fun learning with a real therapy dog for the day
  • Discuss the different terms describing therapeutic interventions with dogs
  • Explore possible applications of working with dogs in therapy
  • Learn about the basic principles of working therapeutically with dogs
  • Understand the vital role of specialist training, risk assessment and modelling
  • Experience the ‘split attention’ of having a dog in the room when working
  • Have an opportunity to ask questions and chat to others interested in working with therapy dogs

1 x 7-hour Session (including Session Breaks):

  • Tuesday 15th February 2022 (9.30am - 3.30pm)
  • Daily Session Breaks: Three (Morning, Lunch and Afternoon)
  • Please note that you will need to attend all of the day in order to receive a CPD certificate

Target audience

Open to anyone with an interest in the subject matter, wants to develop their skills and expand their knowledge. This workshop is particularly appropriate for training and practicing counsellors, psychotherapists, counselling psychologists and others in the helping professions who work therapeutically with others.

Meet Sarah London!

Sarah London is a qualified BACP Snr Accredited Supervisor, Counsellor and qualified and experienced trainer. Sarah has worked with her therapy dog Stanley for seven years, mostly in secondary schools but also with adult clients and supervisees.

Sarah trained with Rise Van Fleet, the internationally renowned therapist, author and founder of the International Institute for Animal Assisted Play Therapy.

She has also trained with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers.

Sarah offers 1:1 counselling and Animal Assisted Therapy for adults, trainee and qualified counsellors, children and young people as well as clinical supervision for individuals and groups of counsellors and others in helping professions.

COVID-19

This is an 'in person' workshop, based at Iron Mill's venue in Exeter. The running of this workshop as an 'in person' workshop is dependent on the Covid-19 restrictions and social distancing measures in place at the time of the workshop date.

If Covid-19 restrictions are such that the workshop cannot go ahead in person, it will either be postponed or moved online. If this happens, all delegates will be contacted and offered the choice to re-book or receive a refund. We will review arrangements 2 weeks' before the event and inform you of any changes.
